Mark Roarty’s journey from standout athlete to community leader is a testament to dedication, passion, and giving back. After moving to Tampa in 1973, Mark quickly became a force in both cross-country and track & field at Tampa Catholic High School. As captain of both teams, he set multiple records, including a 4:27 mile and a 10:00.3 two-mile, earning All-American honors in 1975. His leadership helped the cross-country team achieve a 45-4 record, and his achievements at the Florida Relays set new school records in the mile.
Mark’s success continued at the University of Florida, where he contributed to the 1976 SEC Indoor Championship team and competed internationally with the Florida Track Club. He also earned a spot on the 1975/1976 AAU/USA Junior Olympic team after winning three gold medals at the regional AAU meet.
Beyond athletics, Mark was deeply involved in his school and community. He served as the Crusader mascot, participated in Big Brothers & Big Sisters, and was an officer in the Interact Club. After college, Mark’s career spanned sports retail, journalism, corporate media, and mortgage banking. He also spent over 20 years coaching youth soccer and mentoring young athletes, fostering a love for sports in the next generation.
Mark’s home became a cultural hub, hosting international students and hockey players. A proud father of three and grandfather of four, Mark remains deeply involved in the Tampa Bay community, currently serving as a Guest Services Ambassador for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Inducted into the Tampa Catholic Hall of Fame alongside his brother, Robert ('78), Mark's legacy extends far beyond his athletic achievements. His story is a powerful reminder that true greatness is defined not just by individual accomplishments, but by the positive impact you have on others.
